I think this is probably one of the best photos we have, because so can see the smiles on so many different peoples faces! (Members of the Canterbury Civic Society)

Above you can see the 1st plaque unveiled at the ceremony. It celebrates the terminus of the Canterbury and Whitstable Railway. As well as this, it states the date the world’s first season ticket was introduced! South Eastern announced the start of a new ‘S-Ticket’ scheme.

“It is important for people to know, and understand, about the Canterbury and Whitstable railway for being such a pioneer in 1830, as the first railway built for passenger and goods.”

my granddad ????

The Minister of Transport thanked Canterbury Civic Society for their work to install the blue plaque, and also the Crab and Winkle Line Trust for their work on the cycle route along part of the former railway.

The Canterbury to Whitstable railway was also a pioneer in issuing tickets for the bathing season, or what we now call ‘Season Tickets’!

The Crab & Winkle Line, as it became affectionally known, is now a well used and loved cycle path through Clowes Wood. As you cycle or walk the route you need a bit of imagination to magic up the noise and smell of the steam engines as the wood is now peacefully quiet. But there is the birdsong to joyfully break the silence!
